Morning Pages and Five Minute Journal
Hello lovelies! Yes I am back! Its been a while since I’ve posted because life just got in the way of what I love to do, but I am now more focused then ever and back to share my stories, life, discoveries and journey; perfect or not, interesting or not we are going to have something to say.. and let’s hope you enjoy it!
So a little something I wanted to share with you that just sets me up for the day and that really started to get my creativity and productivity flowing from first thing in the morning is the wonderful ritual of morning pages and my Five Minute Journal.
So what are Morning Pages, you say?
Morning pages are simply a new coined phrase for what a lot of us probably have done for a long time, keep a journal, or write out all our random thoughts or a blurb on a page to get it out. It is the ritual of writing first thing in the morning, upon waking, and basically writing all your thoughts, or perhaps you have a theme that you want to have for your morning pages, such as fantasy or gratitude or your story. There is no right or wrong way to do it. Its your time with yourself and a blank piece of paper, so go wild. For a long time, I used to write only at night; my journals, documenting what I did or what happened on that date, my crazy ideas and hopes, dreams blah blah blah….but also feelings or things I learned etc. and many times I would just write everything that was on my mind to just release it and regain some form of serenity to be able to sleep. However, when I came across the idea of morning pages from Tim Ferris’s book Tools of Titan, it seemed like this novel idea to just write first thing in the morning. I viewed the idea of morning pages as a wonderful reason to get out of bed and begin the day with a calming purposeful and concrete ritual that would excite me and undoubtedly become a habit. That is exactly what happened, for me writing is not only therapeutic, raw and something I am passionate about but it also pulls all my turmoils and internal conflicts out of me and unto a page where it is so much easier to resolve or navigate. I have many passions and interests, and I am cursed with the multi-tasking/multi-talented characteristics that can often confuse our path in life but ultimately my true passion is writing, I come back to it and obviously reading regardless of how long I stray, it brings me joy and is me feels life giving, awakening and enlightening so to wake up to get that feeling every morning is a pretty good reason to jump out of bed in the morning.
How has morning pages changed my morning routine?
Whether its 1 page I write or 10 I feel empowered by two things every morning; I connect to purpose and I accomplish something I love everyday. The fact that I get to wake up to my passion and connect with it so freely without the need to think should I publish this or not, is this good or bad, maybe it needs more research or look at all this awful spelling or grammar mistakes; none of that happens during my morning pages ritual. I just get all of it out unfiltered and raw and move on with my day. Secondly, it’s like making your bed every morning its a habit that makes you feel like you’ve done something positive and completed a task from the very onset of your day, that is an empowering feeling and really makes you feel that you’ve started your morning to the best of your ability, already on a win, besides this particular to do brings me joy.
Morning pages has made me connect with my creativity again and regain a internal flow of ideas and dreams. It has deterred a lot of the inner blocks and fears that I have within me, they leave my head onto the page. Another thing is ideas flow so easily first thing in the morning, visions for my life and my kids’ lives, my relationship, my blog are so present first thing in the morning and with paper and pen I can just let all that run onto a page and preserve what I want, use something from the morning pages or just discard it but it definitely gets me feeling that I can leave all my randomness, dreams, hopes in between those sheets of paper and take the inspiration and concrete ideas I can work with to focus on making those ideas come to life. The days that I don’t gain any particular insight or creative flow I can just move on and focus on the productive aspects of my daily routine to get closer to my goals and just simply manage my day effectively.
You don’t need loads of time to do this practice, it takes me 15 mins and you will get more time back then you imagine, and if you’re thinking well “I am not a writer” or “I have nothing to write”. You’d be surprised once you just simply start with “Dear me,….”
On the other hand if you need to start on a smaller scale first, you can start with the Five minute journal, created by Intelligent Change co-founders Alex and UJ. They also have an app, if you are the techy type. This is simply the most amazing way to start your morning and it really does take 5 minutes, in fact less. It is a wonderful daily log of what you are grateful for and an inspiring quote , what you want to accomplish on that day and a daily affirmation written all by you. Then there is also a night portion that you can do, writing 3 great things that happened on that day (to focus on the positive) and what you can do better the next day?
I do the Five Minute Journal in combination with my morning pages because I feel they serve different purposes for me personally but you can choose to one or other or both like my.
