As a mom of 4, I can tell you my brain feels fried on a good day. I have two primary school going children, a toddler and a secondary school child and they all are going different directions educationally, developmentally and even physically on most days. I wake early to the demands of life which include; raring children, a jam-packed schedule of house keeping, cleaning, meals, homework, activities, wife duties, accounts and budgeting, mail/emails, reading, countless errands and well of course the endless mummy list, then fit in a bit of exercise and maybe some head space for a few minutes and then of course my love of blogging. Now don’t get me wrong, I am very blessed and prefer a busy life over a boring one, but even with my recent incorporation of mindfulness and mid-day mediation to reset my busy brain, my head and thoughts are still on constant overdrive so you can see how the sharpness and focus starts to drain out a young sharp mind and quickly thereafter the mommy fog sets it. So how are we stay- at- home moms, working moms and busy multi-tasking queens in general supposed to take care of our brain health too.
OUR Yummy Mummy Brain Fit Tips
Incorporate some good ol’ skimmed milk into your diet
Substitute full-fat milk for skimmed milk. Skimmed milk has a substance called choline in it, which is great for improving your memory in addition to other benefits. If you are not a fan of wholesome milk then get some good quality chocolate powder or raw cocoa powder to sweeten it up. Choline can also be found in butter, eggs, legumes, peanuts, potatoes, beans, peas, liver, wheat germ and fish.
You can also buy it as a supplement here (capsules or powder for the smoothie lover);
Get you some Phone time
We live in a time of tablets, smart phones and smart watches. So if we are going to be constantly plugged in at least let’s benefit from it and when the kids are having their after-school snack, or they are at their after school activity or in the middle of their free play time, switch off the Facebook/Twitter and switch on one of these great apps to get your brain fired up.
Apps that we love and help you keep sharp;
Now don’t be so hard on yourself
Our brains as moms are wired differently the minute our children enter this world and if you remain a full-time mom and don’t return to the adult world of hustle and bustle and careers, well things get even a bit more re-wired on the home front and you just start to lose that basic sharpness, clarity and focus that we have in a career mindset. However, there is a reason for this but I won’t bore you with the science of it…you are probably already sleepy reading this…Let’s just say ‘you lose some, you gain some’… and as a mom you gain a whole other set of characteristics in our brain chemistry. You become sharp in other ways, sensitive to the feelings or potential internal problems that others may be facing. You have a sharpness and natural instinct for danger, as well as a great ability to manage nearly a million tasks seamlessly without a hitch or hesitation when they come up short notice (ok maybe not seamlessly and maybe a little hesitation/panic but it gets done). You have a great ability to create habit without the chore of thinking how to create such habits, you do it out of pure necessity. Your reactions are quicker and more on point, and you consistently monitor a number of situations at the same time and creatively divert any situation as well. Although your brain is able to deal with all of this, it’s likely to let you down when you are thrown in to a deep heated intellectual conversation about the latest legislative piece up for vote or when your asked for your input into your husband/partner’s work project. You know that feeling, brain freeze, followed by a deep haze, then fogggggg and BOOM you’re back. I hope it’s not just me ladies. So our tip to our yummy mummies and all our readers is incorporate some brain training, while drinking a good ol’ cup of milk and make sure you get some calm time for yourself from the little ones to keep that mommy fog at bay. This way we all have our marbles by the time our little bundles of joy (ahem…terror) head off to college. You’ll be ready to spring back into action with a lethal pounce and get your fancy talk on no problem girlies…. but for now enjoy your mama days and drink up a nice skinny latte for that brain food.
Oh yes of course, Stay Yummy!
