Hello beautiful! Now I know how we all want those pearly whites, but really as moms we just don’t have the time to book a session with laser clinics or give our teeth endless care and attention so let me give you some natural (and some unnatural) lightening whitening tips, some of which you can do when packing your kids’ lunch boxes or whipping up a berry nice treat for the family ;)
THE BAD NEWS
Teeth, their shape, colour, enamel etc. has a lot to do with genetics. Therefore, there are some people that just have naturally whiter straighter or better-shaped teeth or ARGHHH! all of the above . However, there is still some ‘good news’ to stay looking yummy and smiley!
THE GOOD NEWS
Even if you weren’t blessed with a dashing set of pearly whites, with a good dental hygiene routine and throwing in some lightening whitening tips you could fool many to think you were just born with that Hollywood dazzling smile.
‘THE BAD STUFF ‘
In order to fix or at least mitigate discolouration one needs to cut back the bad stuff. Yep, the sweets, the soda, the oh so needed cup of black coffee or tea and any processed foods, which often contain dyes and artificial colouring.
‘THE GOOD STUFF’
The ‘BAD STUFF’ causes oxides, which are the main reason why the enamel on our teeth becomes discoloured. Therefore, you need to introduce the “GOOD STUFF”
Sodium Bicarbonate (YUP good ol’ Baking Soda). Baking soda has so many benefits for one’s health and it will be mentioned a lot on our blog but to mention a few it helps with heartburn, great for exfoliating the scalp, your skin and yes your TEETH. Use finely milled organic baking soda with a soft bristled toothbrush and you will see results fairly quickly. The reason I recommend organic is you want to make sure that the baking soda is very pure and processed in a very conscious manner in order to preserve its integrity and pureness.
DIY: Simply dip your clean tooth brush in water and then in some pure baking soda and scrub away. Make sure you use soft bristles to prevent gum damage.
DIY: Brush your teeth with pesticide-free sage leaves or alternatively get Salvia Officinalis as a extract, again pure and from well known producer is always best for optimum results.
Lemon Peel is great for getting rid of those stubborn stains, especially if you are a smoker this is a MUST TRY.
DIY: Get a very fresh, thick skinned, brightly coloured lemon preferably organic (likely to have less chemicals and will be pesticide-free), rub the peel along your teeth and lift stains.
Banana Peel also is a little trick to keep your teeth whiter. Bananas have minerals such as potassium, magnesium and manganese which is absorbed by the teeth and attacks the oxides that cause discolouration on our teeth.
DIY: Unripened (the greener the better for this one) preferably organic (blah, blah, blah) banana. Rub the peel along your teeth firmly until you feel the dryness of the peel transferred onto your teeth (not my favourite thing but worth it). Wait 5 minutes (if you can stand taste and texture), then drink a large Cup of COFFEE, JUST KIDDING….WATER, of course…or alcohol-free mouthwash will do too.
The banana peel method actually acts as a barrier against stains? Hmmm…bananas and wine, any one? ;)
Hydrogen Peroxide, this one may sound harsh but mix a small bit of hydrogen peroxide with baking soda and WOW DAZZLE DAZZLE DAZZLE!
DIY: Mix a bit of 6% Hydrogen Peroxide (can be found in your local chemist) with some baking soda powder until it is a thick paste, then brush those stains away with a soft bristled tooth brush.
Strawberries and CREAM and by cream I mean baking soda AGAIN! I told you, you’d be sick of hearing about the baking soda.
DIY: Mush the fresh brightly coloured strawberries together with a bit of baking soda into a paste, brush your teeth with the paste and wait 5 minutes and give a rinse with a PH balanced, alcohol-free mouth wash. The mouthwash will balance out any acidity that might be left on your teeth and that wouldn’t be good for the teeth.
The Shopper’s Guide to Teeth Whitening
For the Shopoholics (LIKE ME!) out their who are pure product junkies and need to get their hands on the amazing, pretty and packaged tried and tested and absolutely the BEST-EST of whitening products, here is our list;
Smile Science Teeth Whitening Kit– Pros: AMAZING Cons: Expensive, you need to be regimental to see the results but again results AMAZIIIING!
Whitening Lightening Teeth Whitening Pens– any brand is quite effective but these pens are extremely effective
Pros: great to use on the go, essential for maintaining a dazzling smile. Can be used after wine, coffee, tea etc. I usually put some on while I waiting to collect the kids from school. Doesn’t need to be washed away and a little goes a long way. Also very affordable!
Cons: Doesn’t taste great.
Pros: Amazing toothpastes that give really good results and help maintain those pearly whites. Loads of different formulas and potency and flavours for the White Glo Whitening Toothpaste brand.
Cons: A little bit more expensive than you’re average toothpaste and would still use other toothpastes that protect the enamel of your teeth and against bacteria and offer cavity protection. You can usually find these on special offers often enough to justify buying this toothpaste.
Crest Whitening Strips
Pros: These are by far the most effective teeth whitening strips on the market in my opinion. I have used a lot of different products and they are amazing. You can also easily fit this method into your daily routine and results are very quick. There are different potencies and formulas, depending on your needs (wedding at the weekend or just need a pick me up). They are easy to use and usually great to do when you are reading in bed right before lights out.
Cons: They are pricey and some people complain about gum sensitivity after using them, but I would recommend them for a special occasion or if you want to start off with giving your teeth a bit of white boost!
- Drink your coffee/tea with milk.
- Fruit Juices, try real juice and through a straw.
- QUIT SMOKING! Take up running or some other de-stresser; KNITTING PERHAPS ???
- Brush at LEAST twice a day.
- On the days you are going to have a curry, thick tomato sauce, wine or all the above then do use one of these methods.
- Lil’ tip; currants and onions are great cavity preventing foods. So chow down those scones girls…mmmmmm…;)!
- Last, but certainly not least, visit your dentist for a good clean every six months. It’s an obvious one but seriously I know moms rarely pencil in a dentist appointment for themselves EVER, so start now.
- Oh Yea and Don’t Forget….
